Surfing the web a laughable endeavor, Opera looks to make it worthwhile on the Gear

Samsung’s Gear S smartwatch is cool because unlike its rivals, it is a phone in itself, rather than a sidekick-like companion device to a smartphone that only relays the prompts made on the phone. A question being addressed by Opera is why there are no browsers on the Gear S yet.

The logic behind a new port of Opera Mini to the Tizen-based Gear S is based on exactly that. You’ll be able to browse the web on a 2-inch, wrist-worn screen... that’s something we weren’t expecting anytime soon. Would browsing on a watch be enjoyable though? As an Opera spokeswoman stated, when Opera Mini first launched eight years ago, it was common to use it on mobile phones with screens that small and that really put things into light when we thought of the small screen sizes of phones just 10 years ago.

“At that time, you could browse, move up and down link by link with the number pad on the
phone. I believe there are still people using these 2-inch basic phones to access the web,” it was stated. “Now this smartwatch has the 2-inch screen but with more powerful computing power. It has Opera Mini 7.5, the same version some users currently have on Opera Mini for Android. People can easily do the browsing with fingers since this is designed for touch-based devices.”

The Opera Mini experience is only really useful for looking up bookmarked sites on the browser’s Speed Dial and anything else is really not too useful for the tiny interface. Typing on the device is of course possible but it’s not ideally suited to typing given the small screen.

Reading anything on the Gear S could be annoying too and the constant use of cellular data will probably make the watch’s battery extremely short.

With that being said it would be necessary to get hands-on with Opera Mini on the Gear S before passing making my mind up on the issue... all in all it’s nice to have the option of browsing on the Gear S and if we can leave our smartphones home with a SIM card slot added to these bad boys, that would be the icing on the cake.
